Scrabble Tile Necklaces

It’s only February and I am gearing up for the summer already. Each year I teach a jewelry making class at a local day camp in West Chester. I came across an easy project that can be done in allotted time period of 30 minutes. I will prepare the scrabble tile pendants before the class and the girls (ages 7-13) will do the beading work that goes along with the project.

I thought I would share this easy project with all my readers.

To Make the Pendants:

1) Pick some mixed media art that you would like to use in your project. The images I picked were geared towards tween girls, but you can even find pretty images that adult woman could wear. I found my art in Designs By Linda Nee’s etsy shoppe. I purchased the art and she emailed me the file. I then had the images printed on photo paper at Target, although you could print the images at home on an inkjet.

2) Beadaholique is an online store that sells these epoxy stickers that are specifically designed for scrabble tile pendants and will fit over your art. So order some of these to make your project easy peasy! They also sell the small glue on pendant bails that you will need to purchase. Adhesives you will need are Mod Podge to glue the art onto the scrabble tile and some E6000 to glue your small pendant bail onto the scrabble tile.

3) Once you have all these purchased materials and a scrabble tile, the process is simple.

a. You will take your artwork (which should already be sized to fit the scrabble tile-if you buy scrabble-tile-specific art) and lay it flat.

b. Then you will take the epoxy sticker and cut it out keeping on the backing and the protective covering.

c. Remove the sticker backing and carefully place it over the top of your art. Gently push on the sticker to remove any air pockets and then remove the front protective covering.

d. Take an exacto knife or scissors and cut any excess sticker from around your art.

e. Take your scrabble tile and apply Mod Podge adhesive to the side without the letter. Also add some adhesive to the back of your epoxy art. Apply the sticker with art to your scrabble tile and remove any excess glue. Let dry for 30 minutes.

f. Now you are ready to apply the small bail to your pendant. Take some of the E6000 adhesive and, using a toothpick, apply to the letter side of the scrabble tile. Add your bail to the glue and let dry for 30 minutes.

g. Now you can use coordinating beads to finish off your project or use a simple ball chain if you are not an experienced beader.

Love is Patient, Love is Kind

This verse is usually associated with a marriage or committed relationship. I also think of this when it comes to friendships- true, genuine friendships- and how hard it is to find people who fit this definition of love. When you find someone like this you need to hold on for dear life!

I have a friend I will call Anne*. She has 5 children. She's had a pretty crappy past year- youngest child- her 2 year old son- had a stroke and heart surgery, she lost some friendships that she thought were near and dear to her- only to find out that these friendships weren't genuine and only self-centered. Nonetheless, the loss of these friendships are still difficult and painful. You go through a grieving process and wonder what the hell YOU did. But when someone is a narcissist, YOU didn't do anything wrong...you were just part of the game. The narcissist doesn't even consciously realize that they are the root of all evil! That is probably the worst part of it- you will never get an apology; they don't even realize that they cause so much pain and aren't capable of caring.

Well Anne and I have become friends and I am so blessed to have had the chance to know her. When I meet new people I can usually tell within a small bit of time if I will be friends with the person. I knew pretty quickly that we could be friends- and not just because of our common ground with being burned by the same person. We are both genuine people who can share without judgement, we can be happy for each other when milestones and good things happy, we don't expect anything from each other- just genuine compassion for the human spirit.

I saw this pendant at a shop that I frequently purchase beads from and I thought of Anne. She loves spirals. I wanted to make her something that would put a smile on her face. I don't expect anything in return- just her friendship. I wanted to thank her for being part of my life.

So, thank you, Anne for being in my circle of friends and sharing this life journey with me. I am blessed beyond measure!

Fun Wrap Bracelet

I always love playing around with new techniques and ideas. I recently came across a video on how to make wrap bracelets and I thought, "What the heck? I can do that..." So I tried and I was successful! I changed up the design a little bit by using a ceramic button as a closure, but I think that this makes the bracelet a little more trendy!

I wound up using blue glass beads and rectangular shaped green jade beads...it was super easy and really cute. Take a look at my finished product:

I didn't do to badly for my first try at this technique. I hope you like my bracelet as much as I do! I would love to hear what you think!

A Tribute To My Oma

In life, I believe that we encounter many people, all of whom we meet by no coincidence, but because God knows that we can learn something valuable from them. No matter what kind of influence they may have had on our lives, they still leave us a better person in the end. Evelyn Grace Schaffer is one of those people for me; My Oma! Oma, isn’t it is amazing how one word can mean so much.

Grace, although her middle name, means ‘good will’ and 'blessings.' She has raised a family and has lived through many of the good and bad changing times of our world, therefore has unconditional love for almost everyone she comes in contact with. I don’t think I’ve ever heard her say a bad word about anyone. She has always taught me to be a good person and to respect others. She is a good Christian in every sense of the word and a model for me to help others!

Many of my favorite childhood memories involve food in some way. The smell of dinner fresh from the oven; the flavor of delicious home-baked goods; the joy that fills a happy kitchen. These visceral patterns were imprinted in my mind at an early age and are still with me today. At the center of these memories is my Oma. Her food was just not made with love, it was love. I remember gathering around her table on many holidays eating together as a family; her always serving the men first. She also taught me how to make pies. When she would have leftover dough we would make “milk pies” in little tins. I think that part of my love for cooking comes from my Oma. I like to put thought and love into my meals and that was learned from her.

Oma is such a hard worker and I remember helping her clean. During my high school years I would WANT to spend my weekends with her. I would call her and she would pick me up. I would help her clean and then we would return to her house for a sleepover. I would spend all weekend with her and enjoy every moment of it. We would buy pizza crusts and make our own pizzas. She always seemed to have little sugary boxes of cereal on hand and would let me drink coffee in the mornings. I didn’t mind her snoring either! I just wanted to spend time with her. On one instance, Oma, Auntie, and I went ‘cruising’ down Main Street in Northampton and they had their babushkas on trying to embarrass me. No such luck! Not many high school kids did what I did, but I am grateful that we had these times together.

Now that I've grown up, for the most part, I can reflect on the knowledge my Oma imparted to me. She encouraged me to do the right things in life. To have a family and to raise them well. She didn't just tell me these things, she showed me by example.

I like to think I inherited some of my best qualities from my Oma: my humor and to not take things to seriously, my work ethic, and most importantly my love of food and family.

Oma, I love you with all of my heart and I hope that when I am 90 years old I have the amount of Grace and love that you do! Happy 90th Birthday!

Every Mom Deserves Something Special

As part of our MOMS Club of Coventry we are adopting a family this Christmas. This year it's a single Mom with two young boys. We are gathering items for the boys that the Mom can wrap and place under their tree this year. Well, we also decided that the Mom deserves something special this year too. I created this simple, yet elegant necklace for her. I used brass and copper rings and created a chain maille necklace. I also added some shimmery crystals, glass pearls, and some lampworked glass. Here is the finished product:

If I knew the children's initials I could hand stamp them on the back of the pendant for the Mom.

I surely put some thought into this necklace and I hope that it shows.

It's the Nutcracker Time of Year!!!

It's time for the 40th Anniversary Production of the Nutcracker put on by the Schuylkill ValleyRegional Dance Company. It's going on at the Hill School Center for the Arts in Pottstown on December 3 at 7:30 p.m. and also on December 4 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $20.00 for adults and Seniors/Students are $15.00. There are discount rates for groups of 10 or more.

The Schuylkill Valley Regional Dance Company will be performing a brand "new to the area" "Nutcracker" this year to celebrate its 40th Anniversary. Two former principal dancers from the Kirov Ballet, Andrei Ustinov and Elena Martinson, will be setting choreography on the Company based on the original work by Marius Petipa (originally performed at the Kirov in 1892).

The Company performs a "Nutcracker" annually but this year there will be many changes to what people have become accustomed to in the area. For more information you can call the Company at 484-941-0683. This is a holiday tradition not to be missed.

I am helping out with some fundraising for this wonderful arts center by creating a jewelry set for their basket raffle. Raffle tickets can be purchased at both of the productions of the show.

I created a lovely necklace/earring set...just perfect for the holidays. It's complete with lots of sparkle. Swarovski crystals are paired with crystal pearls and some lampworked glass. Silver plated chain and a lobster claw clasp are used. The earrings are hung on small kidney bean sterling silver wires.

Wedded Bliss

I was honored to be a part of Jen and Mark's wedding back in July. Albeit a small part, but nonetheless I was involved. Jen asked me to create some bridal and bridesmaid jewelry to complement her dress and her bridesmaid dresses. She was going with an ocean/sea theme and her bridesmaid dresses were greens and blues.

I couldn't wait to get started on these. I knew I wanted to incorporate genuine sea glass in all of the necklaces to keep consistency. She showed me an example of what she wanted for herself, so her's was pretty easy to create:

For the bridesmaids, I used different green and blue colored beads to highlight the cobalt blue sea glass and the pewter sand dollar pendants.

I worked back and forth with Jen to get the design she wanted. I also worked with the correct sizing to work with the dresses. A few of the necklaces needed to be re-sized.

All and all, these necklaces were fun to create, Jen was a great bride to work with, and I was so happy to be just a small part of Jen and Mark's special day.

What Is Lupus And How You Can Help

Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body (skin, joints, and/or organs inside the body). Chronic means that the signs and symptoms tend to last longer than six weeks and often for many years. In lupus, something goes wrong with your immune system, which is the part of the body that fights off viruses, bacteria, and germs ("foreign invaders," like the flu). Normally our immune system produces proteins called antibodies that protect the body from these invaders. Autoimmune means your immune system cannot tell the difference between these foreign invaders and your body’s healthy tissues ("auto" means "self") and creates autoantibodies that attack and destroy healthy tissue. These autoantibodies cause inflammation, pain, and damage in various parts of the body.

Lupus is also a disease of flares (the symptoms worsen and you feel ill) and remissions (the symptoms improve and you feel better). Lupus can range from mild to life-threatening and should always be treated by a doctor. With good medical care, most people with lupus can lead a full life.

Research estimates that at least 1.5 million Americans have lupus. The actual number may be higher; however, there have been no large-scale studies to show the actual number of people in the U.S. living with lupus. It is believed that 5 million people throughout the world have a form of lupus. Lupus strikes mostly women of childbearing age (15-44). However, men, children, and teenagers develop lupus, too. Women of color are 2-3 times more likely to develop lupus.People of all races and ethnic groups can develop lupus.More than 16,000 new cases of lupus are reported annually across the country. There is no cure for lupus and in rare forms there is so much organ failure because of the disease that the it is fatal. However, most people do not require hospitalization and can live a fairly normal life if they follow their physician's instructions. (Lupus Foundation of America).

I have a dear friend who suffers from lupus and I am starting to help her raise funds for the Foundation. She is participating in a walk/run coming up in the next month. I will be hosting a jewelry party for her where 15% of the profits will go towards the Foundation. I am also selling some awareness bracelets online in my shoppe. Here is a sample bracelet. Harvest Time Is Coming

With the coming of autumn, the days grow shorter and the nights longer and the temperatures move from warm to cool. The colors of orange and red represent the changing, brilliant colors of autumn foilage. If summer is the period of youth in one's life, then autumn is the adult period.

I have come up with a few pretty new Autumn pieces. This is one of my favorite times of year to create jewelry...the oranges, reds, browns, and muted greens and the changing colors of the leaves can inspire some stunning jewelry pieces. I also love the symbolism associated with the harvest. Nuts and fruits can also pep up creations.

Nikki in Stitches has turned me on to the colors of red, aqua, and white paired together. It's so summery and pretty together! I love the combination so I did an etsy search and found so many gorgeous things. Here are a few of my favorites:

Fun With Polymer Clay

Recently, I have begun to play around with polymer clay. Polymer clay is a sculptable material based on the polymer polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It usually contains no clay minerals, and is only called "clay" because its texture and working properties resemble those of mineral clay. The great thing about this clay is that you can bake it at 275 degrees in your own oven and it hardens. There is no need for a kiln. It is the perfect material to do so many fun projects with your children.

You can purchase polymer clay at your local craft store. It is usually sold under the brand names Fimo, Sculpey, Kato, Polyform, Amaco and comes in every color imaginable. It's sold near the modeling clay...make sure you don't pick up this clay by mistake. Take it from me, if you bake modeling clay is will ooze all over your oven.

You have to kneed the clay a bit to make it pliable and then you can flatten it out with your own palm. I like to use stamps to create fun designs on the clay. Then you can use a pin to poke a 1-2 mm hole where you would like your bail to be placed. I bake the pendants at 275 degrees for about 20 minutes. Once they are done and cooled you can use acrylic paint to paint in your designs. I like to use a lighter ecru or white clay to make pendants then cover the pendant in black paint. I take a paper towel and dab off the paint and then use some silver paint over that...dabbing off excess. It make a really neat antiqued look. Once dried, you can use a polymer clay glaze (also can be purchased at your craft store) to prevent wear and tear on the front of the pendant. I have found that if you glaze the back of the pendant it sticks to your skin when you wear the pendant.

I like to finish off my pendant by placing a pinch bail in the hole you created. Then using a ribbon, leather cord, or another fabric cord to make a necklace out of the pendant.

Here are a few necklaces that I created last night. Let your imagination and creativity know no bounds. I think this would be a perfect tween birthday party activity. Have fun and happy creating.

Bracelets Galore

I have been working quite a bit on my inventory for the upcoming Phoenixville Farmer's Market that I am participating in. I think I have a great selection of necklaces and LOTS of earrings. I don't have too many bracelets to display. I'm not sure why? Bracelets are a great way to use a few leftover beads to make something beautiful. Anyway, I did an earring drop off at Kimberton Whole Foods this past weekend and they placed an order for some bracelets. So, now I can put those leftover few beads to great use. Here are a few examples of things I came up with. I am really into the summery colors like blue and green. I have been using these colors in a lot of my work lately. Under the Boardwalk

I am so in need of a little R and R. Lucky for me, we are heading "down the shore" on Saturday. A week of fun, sand, and surf is exactly what I need. I'm looking forward to reading my book under the umbrella or on the porch of our house; playing in the sand with my kids; hitting the arcade on the boardwalk; eating some fantastic seafood; and just spending some much needed time with my family.

I have been super busy with custom orders and gearing up for the Phoenixville Farmer's Market in July. Also, I've begun prep for the items we are creating at Arrowhead Day Camp this summer. Never a dull moment in Hammi Jammi land.

Just to gear up for the summer and beach, I changed my playlist on this blog. I included on of my all time favorite beach songs. "Under the Boardwalk" by the Drifters always reminds me of my Dad and our trips to the beach when I was younger. I also created a fun shell necklace and matching earrings that I wanted to share with you, my faithful readers.

Too Cool For The Pool

So I recently came across a local artisan that creates the cutest little things. While working on the Living Beyond Breast Cancer fundraising, I met a woman who introduced me to her daughter-in-law. Nikki, of Nikki in Stitches sews so many things. From headbands, to crocheted bracelet kits, to beach hats; you will surely find something that you will fall in love with and must have.
I just ordered a beach hat, which I will use mostly at the pool this summer. I got to pick the fabric and Nikki did the rest. She sent me a photo and I can't wait to receive the finished product tomorrow!

Yoga on the Steps Philadelphia

Well, Yoga on the Steps is done for another year! Amazing, inspiring, spiritual are just a few words to describe the event. This year, unlike last year, there were breast cancer survivors who shared with the 1,100 registered yogis what the Living Beyond Breast Cancer organization means to them and what it means to be a hero. This was very emotional and instead of doing the pose, I had to just sit down and meditate and focus on what they were speaking about. At one point I just looked back at the crowd and was so in awe of the beauty of all these people doing the same pose for the same cause. And the beauty of the Philadelphia Art Museum in the background was the cherry on the top.

I am so utterly proud of team Tri-County for a Cure. This was our first official year as a group and we had 26 members, we were recognized as getting the most community involvement (we created an amazing video around Pottstown with business owner that can be viewed here http://youtu.be/dEGcpoAI488), we raised over $4000 as a team, we grew as individuals and as a group, and I know that we have cultivated friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. I am truly blessed to be part of this yoga community...they are some of the most caring, giving, and compassionate people you will ever meet! My mind is already racing with ideas for next year's event.

Happy Mother's Day....

I try to come up with something cute for my mother and mother-in-law for Mother's Day. They are both amazing woman who I cherish having in my life. They are always there to help out with the kids or lend an ear. I am so blessed to have wonderful relationships with them both. It's rare to find such warmth and caring in people!

In honor of them, I created this really cute "photo tin" to give as presents. I had some photos of my boys done awhile back. Melia from Priceless Moments by Melia did an amazing job capturing my boys. I took a gift card tin purchased at Michaels and added some scrapbook paper, some stickers, and some rick-rack to it and decorated the front. Then I folded a white piece of paper, accordion-style for the inside of the box. I took more scrapbook paper to embellish the pages and then I added wallet size photos to the flaps. And voila, a really adorable gift that the Mom's can carry with them and show off their grandchildren.

I hope that my Mom's have a wonderful Mother's Day and know that they are so very loved by this family!

Renewal of OLD!

I love vintage and antique pieces of jewelry. I can appreciate the craftsmanship and the history behind old pieces. I was lucky enough to acquire several pieces of old jewelry that belonged to a great aunt of mine. One of the necklaces was made out of crystal nuggets of various shapes and sizes. I'm not sure how old these crystals are but I would estimate around 75-80 years old. I thought this piece, in particular, would be perfect to deconstruct and create something "new." The deconstructed pieces have been sitting in a jar on my workbench just waiting to be changed into something more current. I was waiting and waiting and then an opportunity came to me.

Since I am an Artbeads Design Partner, I get periodic emails about getting products to create with in exchange for blogging. There current blogging challenge theme is "What's Old is New Again." Now was my opportunity to use my great aunt's crystals.

I chose some great products from Artbeads. Typically I stick with using silver-toned merchandise in my creations. So, I thought I would step outside my comfort zone and use some brass in my vintage-inspired jewelry. I wound up using some brass artistic wire and also a brass toggle clasp. I also chose some really beautiful lamp work glass beads.

Without further ado, here are my "What's Old is New Again" creations. The lariat-style necklace also contains Swarovski crystals, in addition to my vintage crystal nuggets, some Druk beads in a yellow/tan hue. The earrings are made with gold-plated earring hooks.

How To Make Fundraising...Well....Fun???

First, I want to introduce you to an organization unlike any others....Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC) was founded in 1991 and was one of the first resources to provide information, connection and support to woman with breast cancer who have completed treatment. Today, it's an organization that assists women at all stages of diagnosis, treatment and recovery at low or no cost. They cover education and support services to woman who are newly diagnosed, are in treatment, have completed treatment or are living with metastatic disease. LBBC really empowers woman affected by breast cancer to live as long as possible with the best quality life.

I am honored to be part of LBBC's annual event "Yoga on the Steps" again this year. It's an event where a thousand plus yogis assemble and practice yoga all in the name of Breast Cancer Awareness. It's such an uplifting, powerful event and I encourage anyone in the Berks, Montgomery, of Chester Counties to join our "Tri County for a Cure" team. This year, unlike last, we have assembled a team and have begun our fundraising efforts to help this worthwhile cause.

I was asked by LBBC to write a short e-blast about how to make fundraising fun. I thought I would expand on my few short sentences and give you some details on what Tri County for a Cure is doing to raise funds.

Brainstorm with your team and find ideas that inspire. There's lots of things that you can do that require very little work. And even if you do have to put some manpower into your efforts, you won't notice since you are inspired!

Our team is having a yoga/live harp music event. At this event we will have a basket auction with some donated items (Mary Kay products, jewelry, massage/restaurant gift certificates, handcrafted yoga bags etc.) We will also have a table set up with some items for sale. Tri County for a Cure is making some tee-shirts with our team logo. We have a phenomenal artist on our team who has generously donated her artistic abilities to design our logo. We are getting iron ons and some tee-shirts pretty low cost and the profits of the sale will go towards our fundraising, as will the sale of raffle tickets.

Another idea we have is having a fundraising night at Rita's Italian Ice in Early April. This is easy to do and requires very little from our team. We really just have to promote the event and watch the funds roll in.

Additionally, Hammi Jammi Jewelry has created a fundraising bracelet and some other jewelry items where 15% of proceeds will go towards Tri County for a Cure. The team members have order forms and are getting friends and family to purchase.

We have another very special project that we are working on that gets the whole community involved, but that will have to be revealed at another date. I don't want to ruin the fun and spoil the surprise.

I guess my main message is to "do what you love, love what you do" and positive results will flow!

Yoga and Breast Cancer: A Positive Complement

Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast. It is considered a heterogeneous disease-differing by individual, age group, and even the kinds of cells within the tumors themselves. Obviously no woman wants to receive this diagnosis, but hearing the words "breast cancer" doesn't always mean an end. It can be the beginning of learning how to fight, getting the facts, and finding hope.

Woman in the United States get breast cancer more than any other type of cancer except for skin cancer. It is second only to lung cancer as a cause for cancer death in women. Each year it is estimated that nearly 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die. Approximately 1,700 men will also be diagnosed with breast cancer and 450 will die each year. The evaluation for men and women are similar and include mammography.

In recent years, there's been an explosion of life-saving treatment advances against breast cancer, bringing new hope and excitement. Instead of only one or two options, today there's an overwhelming menu of treatment choices that fight the complex mix of cells in each individual cancer. The decisions- surgery, then perhaps radiation, hormonal (anti-estrogen) therapy, and/or chemotherapy- can feel overwhelming.

Yoga is increasingly being studied as a complementary treatment for breast cancer. This means that in addition to the above mentioned treatment options, yoga is used to help alleviate the side effects of these harsh treatments. Yoga has been shown to increase energy, vitality, and the quality of life. Gentle and restorative yoga practices help to promote immune function, help to boost circulation, and help to reduce discomfort following surgery. The mind-body connection is a powerful tool.

Several studies have shown the benefits of yoga after a breast cancer diagnosis:

- An M.D. Anderson Cancer Center study that found that women being treated for breast cancer felt better after yoga, with less fatigue and daytime sleepiness.

- A Duke University study of yoga for women with breast cancer that spread beyond the breast found that a customized yoga program led to less pain and fatigue and more relaxation.

- A study of the Iyengar method of yoga conducted at Washington State University, Spokane, found that the style promotes psychological well-being and perhaps boosts the immune system of women in treatment for breast cancer.

All these things being said, I am proud to be participating in an amazing event again this year. "Yoga on the Steps" sponsored by "Living Beyond Breast Cancer. 1000+ yogi will practice yoga on the steps of the Philadelphia Art Museum on May 15th. In an effort to raise funds for this inspiring event and promote breast cancer awareness, I have created a bracelet which is on sale in my shop.

I am an Artbeads.com Design Partner. Periodically, I get to choose products based on a theme and then get to create beautiful jewelry using the materials I pick. The current theme is Winter Enchantment and I was asked to create something that represents what I find beautiful or inspirational about the winter season. Eat, Pray, Love Inspired Creations

I just finished reading Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. This book really touched me and now happens to be on my top ten books of all times list. I've talked to some people who didn't like this book or who couldn't relate to it. I think that if you are in the right time of your life and all the stars align; are open-minded; and spiritually focused I don't know how you would not like this book. Liz's journey in the pursuit of pleasure, spirituality, and a balance between the two after a nasty divorce is full of insight. She really learned to pay great attention to the things that really matter.

In honor of the New Year and all the resolutions that follow, I thought I would start off on the right foot. I decided to create more spiritually focused jewelry items. I created a lovely family birthstone rosary for my mother for Christmas. I even had it blessed by a local priest to make it even more special for her. It includes all the birthstones of those in my immediate family.

Next, I decided to create a few malas (Liz Gilbert focused Eat Pray Love around the premise of the mala). Quoting from the book, "the traditional japa mala is strung with 108 beads. Amid the more esoteric circles of Eastern philosophers, the number 108 is held to be the most auspicious, a perfect three-digit multiple of three, it's components adding up to nine, which is three threes. And three, of course, is the number representing supreme balance, as anyone who has studied the Holy Trinity or a simple barstool can plainly see."

A Japa mala is a set of beads commonly use by Hindus and Buddhists, usually made from 108 beads, though other numbers, usually divisible by nine, are also used. Malas are used for keeping count while reciting, chanting, or mentally repeating a mantra. This practice is known in Sanskrit as japa. Malas are typically made with 19, 21, 27, 54, or 108 beads.

I decided to make some mala necklaces that could be used for meditation, fashion, or both. These necklaces are both half malas (containing 54 beads total; 27 on each side).

This mala is made using carved Bayong wooden rounds and Green Adventurine. Green Adventurine is the stone of luck and chance. It is said to increase

perception and creative insight. It is a heart chakra stone.

This mala also using carved Bayong wooden rounds along with Tiger's Eye. Tiger's Eye is a grounding stone and helps wearers remain patient and focused with deliberate actions. If you need to make changes in your life, this stone is for you. A resin Buddha is also attached as a pendant.

My wish for you in the New Year is that you find much pleasure, peace and balance and you are fulfilled in all aspects of your life.

What are your favorite color combinations and what do you create with these colors?

I would love to hear of your color inspirations, but for me I tend to do a lot with greens and blues. I also really like how amazonite and red coral looks together. I really love the ocean and the sand. I love the warm weather, especially now that it's like -2000 degrees here. I also am partial to purple for some unknown reason. I like amethyst and dyed purple jade.

Here are a few examples of my favorite color combinations in the jewelry that I've created:

This bracelet was created as a Christmas present

for my son's preschool aid. There is a little

charm that says "inspire" at the clasp.

This necklace was created using Amazonite and

a red Cinnabar heart. I envisioned a bridesmaid

wearing this piece at her friend's wedding.

I had a great experience at the Phoenixville Farmers' Market last Saturday and I will be there again this Saturday selling my jewelry. It was refreshing to see so many people brave the cold weather to support the local community. There were farmers selling produce; Amish selling baked and canned goods; butchers selling bison, fresh poultry, and pork; a fisherwoman who was selling salmon she actually caught with her husband in Alaska; and various artisans selling items they create with their own hands.

This holiday season, I encourage you all to support your local communities and artisans. You can find so many unique gifts for those people on your lists. Additionally, you should feel good about helping out people in our country and supporting their hard work. You may pay a little more, but it's worth it to know you are doing a good deed. Don't forget to get the fixins' for your holiday meals from local growers, as well.

Holiday Glamour

My dear friend is having her 20th high school reunion and she wanted to get the perfect outfit so she feels good about herself. After having 3 kids and staying home for the past several months on maternity leave, the standard mommy attire just didn't cut it and didn't make her feel good about herself. I helped her put together a smokin' hot outfit complete with sparkly tank, shrug with some feathers around the collar, tight black pants and tall leather boots. She really looks fantastic. The only thing missing was her jewelry. I told her I would create something that would compliment the outfit perfectly.
Here is what I came up with for her. This is not the exact set but something very similar. It is perfect for the holidays coming up (Christmas parties, New Years, Hanukkah). I also think it would be great if you are having a black and white wedding. It would be really pretty to add that touch of glam to the bridesmaids dresses. Another great thing about these pieces is that I could create the same thing using a different colors scheme to make any outfit look fantastic!

Inspiration???? Hmmmm, that's a tricky one. I am inspired by so many different things depending on my mood. If I'm feeling Zen, I like to create jewelry with affirmations like "meditate, love, and om" on them.

Silver plated Om charm and love inspiration.

If I am longing for the ocean or the beach, I like to create pieces using hues of green and blue with some sea glass thrown in. Or I like to use dolphins, sea stars, or sand dollars.

Turquoise nugget focal bead with turquoise colored glass rondelles and

twisted green sea glass. Silver plated toggle.

My favorite season is Autumn and during this time I am inspired by the changing colors and I like to use hues of orange, red, yellow and copper...oooohhhh, I love copper.

Really no matter what, I can be inspired by just about anything in my surroundings. I like natural looking stones and ceramics and sometimes I like to add a touch of silk ribbon.

I guess as an artist, I can find inspiration and beauty in everything. One day I could look at something and not be inspired, but the next day, I can come up with something beautiful by looking at the same thing.

Happy Harvest Time

Thanksgiving is right around the corner. This year, my family is the lucky host of the holiday. My husband's family and my dear friend's family will be sitting down to feast and give thanks with us. I feel so blessed to have such wonderful people to share my Thanksgiving with. Along with the usual turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole and green bean casserole I like to come up with a festive table setting. We use paper plates and I like to come up with a fun centerpiece. This year I am putting these fun pilgrim hats in the center of each table along with some votive candles. The votives will have dried beans and candles inside and then wrapped with raphia ribbon. The pilgrim hats were so easy to make. I painted a terra cotta pot black and then hot glued on some white ribbon and a silver jewelry link. Then I added some flowers of my choice. I'm sure you could make these interesting centerpieces too.

I did a small craft show on Friday night and for the size of the show and the amount of people and the competition I had, I did very well. I got so much positive feedback on my items and my set up. I really do feel that I have SOMETHING for everyone. I have pieces for the young and old, at all price points. I am very proud of the quality of my pieces. I use sterling silver and silver plated materials and I use wire guardians to prevent wear and tear at the clasps. The pieces I create will last for many special occasions and beyond!

The topic for discussion for this half of the month is "What are your top 3 horror movies and why do they scare you???"

Let me say that a horror movie is not on the top of my list to watch. Not because they scare me but because I find most of them gruesome with needless violence. I'm not into the Friday the Thirteenth movies or any in that type of genre. I prefer the scary movies that seem more "realistic" to me. So, I would have to say my top two are:

1) Blaire Witch Project
2) The Shining

I think these movies provoke real fear in a real world setting. The deaths are left more up to the imagination and scare the crap out of me.

The third movie that I would have to say scares me is "Dracula." When I was little and by little I want to say 12 or 13, I watched a version of Dracula called "Blackula" with the vampire being a black male. I watched it at my grandmother's house and for some reason I was too afraid to sleep alone for the next few weeks. I remember pulling a mattress into my little sister's room and sleeping on her floor (like she would be able to protect me....HA!).

I create for the customers and really love when people fall in love with my creations. Customers are so appreciative of the crafts we as artisans can provide.

The North Coventry Food Pantry Needs Your Support

The North Coventry Food Pantry has been in existence for more than 20 years and assists over 70 families in the entire OJR School District Community. They heavily rely on donations to supplement what they receive from the Department of Agriculture. Donations are always needed. The Pantry needs canned foods, beverages, cleaning supplies, paper products and more.

I just received a very sad email from a friend who volunteers for the Pantry. I thought I would share some of the message with you, in the hopes that you could spread the word if you live in the Pottstown area:

".... just finished packing our food for distribution for the month of October. I have to tell you that in my 5 + years of volunteering for the food pantry I have never seen the shelves so bare. We are currently serving approx. 70 families. We continue to have 2 or 3 new families each month. The food we receive each month from the department of agriculture (what we call our State food) has decreased in the past couple of months. It is supposed to be considered a 3 day supply of food for our clients. Last month we only received peanut butter, apple sauce, cheddar cheese soup, juice, and a frozen meat. For the month of Oct. we received apple sauce, egg noodles, dried milk and peaches, orange juice and 1 meat. We are relying more than ever on the donated food to supplement what the state is giving us.

...if we had to pack for our Nov. distribution with what I have on the shelves the boxes would be very light. I would say we have about 2 months of vegetables and soups left. We try to give 4 cans of each out. We have a 1 month supply (each client only receiving 1 can or box) of the following: fruit, pasta, canned pasta, tuna, peanut butter, mac and cheese, beans, and Ramen noodles. We are completely out of breakfast items, jelly, desserts, and sides dishes. We have not had enough "luxury" items to hand out lately like toothpaste and soap. We have been purchasing our toilet paper and paper towels products for the last few months. We were fortunate to have a monterary donation from Grainger to help us with those items."

So I bet you are wondering what you can do to help out. Here are a few suggestions:

1) Make a food or monetary donation directly to the Pantry. It is suggested that you contact Mrs. Gilligan for the current need suggestion list and for contribution drop off arrangements. You can also drop off at the Pantry (lower level, off Urner St.) on the first Tuesday of the month during monthly distribution between 9-10 a.m.

2) Participate in the "Make a Difference Day." On Friday, October 1st (the unofficial kick-off) at the Owen J. Roberts High School Football game we will be collecting donations of non-perishable food, paper goods, personal care items as well as monetary donations to benefit the North Coventry Food Pantry. Collection boxes will be located at each gate. On Oct. 23rd is deemed "Make a Difference Day" in the OJR District. The will be an event at the middle school to collect food to benefit the North Coventry Food Pantry. Please check the school district website for additional information. Each school will be hosting a collection during the month.

I know I will be heading out to the grocery store tomorrow to pick up a few bags that I can donate. I will look for canned goods (you can sometimes get 10 for $10), and personal care items. I just know how fortunate I am to have food on my table 3 meals a day...no questions asked...it's always there for me. As a mother, I can't imagine putting my kids to bed at night without food in their bellies.

I hope you are able and willing to help out your community members with this effort and show some love and compassion for those in need.

Working With Memory Wire

Memory wire is made from stainless steel and is used as a beading medium. It's called "memory" because it is already formed in the shape of rings, like a spring, and it stays in this form for the most part, unless you really overwork it. Even then, it will still be like a spring, just larger because overworking it can make it stretch its shape a little. But generally speaking, this material is very easy to work with. It comes in bracelet, ring, and necklace size. I think that it's the perfect way for beginners to start working with. I am also thinking of teaching the campers how to make some memory wire bracelets for the Arrowhead Day Camp elective classes that I teach in July.

I have been making quite a few Memory Wire bracelets as of late. I really like making these for two reasons: They are pretty much one-size-fits all; They also are fairly inexpensive to create.

I tend to use bead chips and then add some larger beads to add interest. I also like to make bead dangles and add them to the loops on one side of the bracelet. For the dangles I use beads and chips from the bracelet design and then I like to add a message tag (happiness, dream, laugh etc.)

Here are two examples of pieces I've recently created:

For this bracelet, I used Carnelian nuggets and Turquoise chips.

This bracelet is made using light Amethyst chips and handcrafted ceramic beads.

For the dangle, I added a message tag and some Amethyst Swarovski crystals.

Wedding Fun

I am part of the amazing etsybloggers team. This group helps promote each other as artists and as creative people by blogging about their crafts and each others. Part of this involves having different blog topics that we do bi-monthly. I am participating in a the second topic for the month of September. It's all about weddings. So here it goes. I was asked to include a picture from my wedding and also to include something from my shoppe that could be used for a wedding. I really wish I knew how to make jewelry 9 years ago. I would have worn something more interesting than pearls. However, these are my Mom's pearls so they are special to me and I guess that's all that matters.

This gorgeous necklace is made with cream colored Swarovski Crystal Pearls and vintage crystals. The crystals came from a necklace that was my great aunt's that I deconstructed. I believe that they are around 75-80 years old. I also added a sterling silver toggle heart clasp to this beauty and there is a bezel set cubic zirconia at the drop. I love this necklace and it would have been something I could have created and worn myself on my special day.

Colors of Fall Artbeads-Style

I got another invitation from Artbeads to participate in their Blogging for Beads program. I have been working with them for the past year or so. As the summer comes to a close, they wanted me to be inspired by all the gorgeous colors of Fall and create keeping this in mind.

I went out on a limb with this task. Normally, I check out what colors will be popular for the upcoming seasons and create with this in mind. This time I used the Color Scheme Designer. I decided I wanted to use a tetrad of colors that would complement copper. So this is what I came up with:

I really fell in love with the Copper Heart Shaped Leaf Pendant and I think it really highlights the 12 mm Malachite rounds and the 8 mm Olive Jade rounds nicely. Then I added some carnelian roundelles and some darker red carnelian rounds with some 6 mm fuschia Swarovski rounds.

I think I will go out on a limb and try some more bold color combinations in the future.

Yoga For A Cure: Part Two

"Yoga for the Cure 2," the second local fund-raiser to benefit a Pottstown participant in the three-day Breast Cancer Walk For The Cure, is being planned for October 1, 2010 (Friday) from 7-9 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Pottstown, 750 North Evans Street, Pottstown PA.

The event will be a relaxing evening of gentle yoga followed by tea, coffee, desserts, henna tattoos, chair massage, and giveaways. The money to be raised will be part of a $2,000 goal for participants walking 20 miles daily for three consecutive days to combat breast cancer.

A similar yoga fund-raiser conducted during June raised $640.

A suggested donation for the event is $20.00, and advance reservations are requested. Organizers are also looking for people who are willing to donate products, gift certificates, or services for the giveaway raffles. For more information or to make a reservation, call Barbara at 484-525-5204. If you plan to attend, here is one of the items being raffled off:

Working With Copper

I have been experimenting with using copper lately. Typically I use sterling silver or silver plated metal in my creations, but now I'm starting to use more copper. The copper really warms up the pieces. I am especially fond of using turquoise, carnelian, and copper together. So very pretty, in my humble opinion!

How Do You Celebrate The End Of Summer?

Labor Day is just around the corner. Traditionally, it marks the end of summer and the beginning of a new school year. Around our house, we are trying to soak up the last bits of summer by going to the pool one last time; by having one last outdoor BBQ with friends; by hitting the beach for just one more jump in the cool ocean waves.

We are also getting ready to start another year of school. This is a big year for us. My oldest son is starting second grade and my little baby (oh where did the time go???) is starting preschool this year. It's only 2 mornings a week, but it seems like just yesterday that I was dropping off my older son, clinging to my leg, at his first day of big boy school. We have gathered our backpacks, lunchboxes, pencils and erasers, and our first day of school outfits...not that boys this age care so much about that "just right" outfit. I can't wait to capture the first days of school on film for prosperity.

As far as creativity goes, I have been working on many new jewelry pieces for the Fall months. I love using the reds, oranges, and greens. To me, it symbolizes change. All the deeper hues of the colors we use other times of the year. I love the crisp scent of the air, wood burning in an outdoor fireplace, the colors of mums and pumpkins. Everything is just so beautiful and I love to spend time outside this time of year. I hope everyone enjoys the change in the weather and all the beautiful colors!

Looking Forward To Fall/Winter....

I know that it's only August, but now is the time that I am starting to think about the cooler weather months. I love Fall especially. The gold, rust, and copper colors are really beautiful and I love watching the leave change their colors, going to pick pumpkins, and decorate my house for Halloween and Thanksgiving. I also start to think about what colors are going to be upcoming designer trends; the colors that YOU will start to see in the department stores, fashion, and runway magazines. Consumers will want to start to look for jewelry and accessories that will coordinate with the new lines of clothing. So in order to help you out, I will do all the dirty work for you. I will keep up to date on what colors you will start to see and design jewelry accordingly. For the Fall/Winter months a few colors start to stand out in my mind: Tandoori Masala, Calendula, California Buckwheat, Calypso, Indian Ruby, and Cast Bronze.

Here are a few pieces of jewelry that I created that incorporate a few of these colors:

This double-stranded necklace is created using goldstone ovals and turquoise (california buckwheat and calypso) & also amber heishi beads (tandori masala). Just a little fact about amber....it's actually created from fossilized tree sap. This necklace is highlighted nicely with copper clasp and focal bead.

This is another favorite creation of mine. Crab fire agate ovals are paired with turquoise rounds (indian ruby and calypso). There are also some fire polished black glass beads along with some silver plated spacers to add some interest. The sterling silver round pendant is so much fun for the upcoming months.

A Child's Paradise....

I have had the opportunity to share my talent with others and I am thrilled to share my experience with my readers. Back in May, I was asked to submit a proposal for several jewelry workshops at Arrowhead Day Camp during the month of July. I would be working with intermediate and senior campers to create jewelry. I was nervous and excited at this work opportunity. I have done a few children's birthday parties, so this couldn't be that different. I was correct and I've had such a great time with these young ladies and being able to share my passion with them.

With the senior campers we created freshwater pearl and Swarovski Crystal ankle bracelets with a flip flop charm.

With the intermediate campers we worked on a green and pink fire-polished glass bloomin' stretchy bracelet.

Arrowhead Day Camp is located in West Chester, PA and is situated on over 50 acres of rolling countryside--and it's been there since 1956 and run by the same family. I was totally blown away at all this camp has to offer--you name it, it's there...horseback riding, swimming, boating, a taboggon style waterslide, games, arts and crafts, computers, and much, much more. They are even putting on a production of Annie this year.

They say that's it's where new experiences are a common daily occurrence; where friendships and memories are endeared; where kids can learn, grow and enjoy to the maximum their talents and abilities. And I truly believe that I would be hard-pressed to find a child who wouldn't have the time of their life at this place.

I am so glad that they let me into their Arrowhead family for a brief period of time and I thank the owners Ellen and Howie Gilbert for such a wonderful camp experience. I had a blast and I think I will keep these memories close to my heart for a long time. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Happy Early Birthday, Kristina

One of my dearest friends' birthday is coming up. We still exchange presents since we are important parts of each other's lives. I met her in college our freshman year, we pledged the same sorority, and have similar life paths as far as work, marriage, and families go. Needless to say, we have remained friends 17 years and I know we will be friends forever.

Back in May when she was here for a visit with her son, I was showing her some of the jewelry I have created. She really loved my photo jewelry and wanted me to make something special for her Mom for her birthday/Mother's Day. She decided on a photo bracelet with the grandkids pictures in it. All she had to do was send me some digital photos and I did the rest.

As a present to her I said I would create a bracelet for her as well. I wanted to share this with you. I love the black and white photos. I think it turned out really well and I know she will wear it proudly. I love to have people, especially friends wear pieces I create. There is so much satisfaction in making something pretty that someone will enjoy over and over again.

So, Kristina I wish you tons of happiness this upcoming year. I hope you have lots of sunshine and stars; joy and peace; love and contentment! You are an amazing friend that I will cherish forever!

For a Good Cause

I recently attended an amazing, inspiring, and deeply moving event called Yoga Unites Living beyond Breast Cancer; a Yoga event in Philadelphia on the steps of the Art Museum. One thousand yogis were there for one cause and the energy was palpable. It was such and uplifting experience for me.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.
The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is a little less 1 in 8. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 35. Breast cancer death rates have been going down. This is probably the result of finding the cancer earlier and better treatment. Right now there are more than 2½ million breast cancer survivors in the United States (http://www.cancer.org).

A friend of mine was also moved by the experience we had on the Art Museum steps and she wanted to do something similar on a smaller scale. A yogi in one of her classes is participating in the 3 Day Walk for the Cure and they decided to join forces to do some fund-raising for a good cause.

I wanted to invited any readers who are in the area to participate in an evening of Yoga accompanied by live harp music with Betsy Chapman followed by tea, coffee, pink desserts and fun giveaways. All proceeds benefit the 3 day walk for the cure. Suggested donation $20 Wear Pink!

The Bonds of Friendship and Motherhood

I just finished reading a book that touched me on so many levels that I was compelled to write about it. This doesn't happen too often. This book left me laughing and sobbing uncontrollably at the end. It's a story about genuine friendship and coming of age, family and the mother-daughter relationship, and health. It chronicles the journey of a friendship from the 70s until the present and incorporates music (how powerful music is and can bring back memories in an instant). The book is Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah.

First of all, I have friends from different eras of my life. The high school friends (Saadia, Jen, and Carrie). The college friends (Kristina and Holly), the mommy friends (Barbara and Joy), the neighborhood friends (Cheryl and Robin) and then there are a few new friends who I anticipate I will remain friends with for a long time (Vanessa, Louise, Pam, Diana). I have found something special in each of them: their genuine nature; their ability to be compassionate; their love and acceptance of me for who I am. I can count on each of these girls for anything and their friendship has lasted the test of time. I am blessed to have these friendships. While reading this book I realized that each of these ladies has come into my life when I thought I was alone in this world and brought things to my life I didn't even know I needed. We all need special woman in our lives. To quote the author, " As I've gotten older, I've really begun to see how profoundly important we woman are to each other. Men and careers and even children can come and go in our lives, but our friendships are forever. " True friends are few and far between. Thank you friends for being my valentines.

Another theme of the book is about the mother-daughter relationship. The mother-daughter relationship is magical, complex, powerful, transformative. There's nothing like motherhood that makes us reassess how we were as daughters. Who we are in the present is colored by the differences in how our mothers raised us. That is definitely seen in the main characters in this book. One had a loving, slightly over protective mother and the other a drug addict who was never present for her child. I think back during my childhood and think about all the things my mother did for me. Yes, she was overprotective, but that was her loving me to the best of her ability. We will all mess up our children in some small way, but at the end of the day, it's love that really matters. She would play with me and never miss a birthday celebration. I don't recall too many mother-daughter heart to heart conversations, but I think that was the generation...a lot was left unsaid. I don't think I was a horrible or bad teenager either. I did what I was told and only wanted to please. I do recall one time when I was trying to assert my independence...it was prom and my Mom wanted to call the parents who were hosting the after prom party and I refused to give her their number. I just wanted some trust, but now I understand wanting to be protective and keeping your child out of harm. I have no idea if she ever found their phone number or called, but it felt good for me to refuse and stomp away. Afterall, I was leaving for college in a few months. I just want to thank my Mom for being a special woman in my life and for putting up with me. You made me who I am as a wife and mother. You are amazing!

The last theme in the book I wanted to discuss is health-related. I have my Master's degree in Public Health, so this is an important one for me. If I can help one woman look out for warning signs, I have made a difference. One of the characters in this book gets a rare, aggressive form of breast cancer called Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC). The character in the book was diligent about mammograms, breast self exams, and annual gynocological visits. She even went to the doctor for treatment of a bug bite on her breast and was given antibiotics. Unfortunately, what everyone thought was a bug bite was IBC. Symptoms of IBC may include redness, swelling, and warmth in the breast, often without a distinct lump in the breast. The redness and warmth are caused by cancer cells blocking the lymph vessels in the skin. The skin of the breast may also appear pink, reddish purple, or bruised. The skin may also have ridges or appear pitted, like the skin of an orange. These symptoms usually develop quickly—over a period of weeks or months. These symptoms can be typical of other things, like a bug bite so diagnosis can be missed. If you want more information about IBC please visit the National Cancer Institute.

Custom Thank You For Teachers

I spoke of this idea in my last post. I created a really beautiful, sterling silver hand-stamped necklace for my son's teacher. The round pendant reads "Teach - Love - Inspire" and has a heart and some Swarovski Crystal pearls dangling near the pendant. The words on the pendant can be anything you would like. The back can even be stamped with the teacher's name.

It's a really nice keepsake to remind the teacher in your life that they are special and that they do an important job!

How do YOU thank the teachers who have taught your kids throughout the long school year?

I only have one child who is school age. I know when he is home from school the dynamics in our household change. There is more noise, more fighting, more everything. Being a teacher is a job I surely wouldn't want to have. I know that as a mother, I AM a teacher, but the thought of having 20+ kids in one room really sends me over the edge of insanity. Being a teacher is an extremely hard job. Teachers mold our children and prepare them for the future as productive adults.

So, let me ask you again..."How do you thank your child's teacher?" Do you give them soap, a candle, a "World's Greatest Teacher" mug. My mom was a teacher and I know for a fact that she neither smelled nor needed any more teacher mugs. I think teachers deserve more than these items. They deserve something that they can cherish and remember why they do what they do day in and day out.

Scenes of Summer

Wow, I can't believe Summertime is quickly approaching. For me, this means having BOTH children at home and not in school, occupying our days with pools and bike riding; it means warm weather and blue skies with the occasional quick thunderstorm; it means vacations and ice cream and just old fashioned family fun.

One of the traditions in our family is to spend a week or two at the beach each summer. It's tranquil and a change of pace for us. There's not much to do besides play in the sand, swim in the ocean and pool, go for long bike rides, and get ice cream treats after dinner time.

That's why when Artbeads asked me to focus on creating something with a Summer theme, I was excited with anticipation for all the fun I could have with their vast selection of pendants and glass beads and how they could relate to what I think summer means. Ultimately, I chose this amazing stoneware pendant and paired it with some mint alabaster and blue iris fire polished glass and some
topaz porphyr fire polished glass beads. There are also some turquoise roundelles and sterling silver findings in this piece. All the colors in these beads and pendant remind me of the summers we spend at the beach and brings a smile to my face. I hope this creation brings joy to you too.

Etsybead Team--Mystery Bead Swap--Part One

Hello readers. I wanted to share something fun my wonderful Etsybead team is doing. The etsybead team mystery bead swap is a way to spark our creativity and have some team fun along the way. The way it works is: Participants were randomly paired up with team members and the partners have to send a selection of beads to each other. These beads and findings are no longer wanted or needed and the partners create new jewelry out of the supplies.

I was paired up with Dg Designs based out of Central, NJ. I was especially excited that I got her since she makes handcrafted lampwork glass beads and was secretly hoping she would send me a few of these beads. Boy, I wasn't disappointed. This is what she sent me to work with:

Communion and Motherhood

I have been super busy working on custom orders these past few weeks. I thought I would share a few of those pieces with you. I hope it sparks your creativity and helps you to figure out customizations of your own.

This first piece is a bracelet a client is giving to her niece as a Communion present. This is actually one of three she is having me create. The other two bracelets will use Rosaline Swarovski Crystal pearls.

Light green Swarovski Crystal pearls are paired with sterling silver daisy spacers and one larger round on each side. Sterling silver alphabet blocks are used for the initials. Cream Swarovski Crystal pearls are near the lobster claw clasp. A sterling silver extender is used so the girl can wear the bracelet for years to come. Oh, and how can I forget the sterling silver cross to commemorate the special event.

The next item I created was for a thoughtful husband to give to his wife in the delivery room after the birth of their first child. The hubbie really wanted to incorporate the peas in a pod to the necklace.

Graduated sterling silver rounds complement the hand stamped heart and the pewter peas in a pod charm. The front of the charm says "Mom" and the back has my client's last name. Truly a special keepsake for the new mother to cherish for years to come.

The last piece I wanted to share is a Mother's Day Present. It's a Copper bookmark and I think this is perfect for the avid reader. My client's mother LOVES pink so this is what I came up with.

Rose quartz, pink Swarovski Crystals, Rhodonite rounds and some copper make this bookmark magical.

Heading Off To Consignment

The Beauty of Spring

If you are anything like me, I've been dreaming of Spring since the first snowflake fell. I'm not much of a winter person and I am not much of a too hot person either, so Spring and Fall are my favorite times of year. I'm itching to start planting my flowers and my vegetable garden. Just being outside rejuvenates me...breathing in the fresh air, having the house windows open and letting the fresh breeze blow the curtains. This is just peace to me. Aaaahhhh...I guess I have to wait a few more months for my dreams to become a reality. In the meantime, I've been creating pieces of jewelry that remind me of the Springtime. I have been playing around with digital images and using resin and framed pendants to create beautiful focal pieces for my beaded jewelry. This one I used is a silver-plated, pewter frame and they come in all shapes, sizes, and materials. Since my focal pendant has so many beautiful, vibrant colors I chose to use Czech fire polished glass beads in orange, some orange/yellow mixed roundelles, and since orange and blue are complementary colors I chose some blue lace agate rounds to finish off the color scheme.
This piece is so fun and really gets me in the mood for the Springtime weather. I think I'll wear this piece today to really get me in the mood!

Domino Necklace: Blog List Giveaway

I am so tired of this snow and cold weather. We are getting more snow as I type. In the effort to get me out of the winter doldrums, I created this really fun and stylish necklace out of a domino playing piece. I adhered an image to the domino and then added Diamond Glaze over top to create a photo (glossy) shine to the pendant. I used blue faceted fire-polished Czech glass, turquoise rounds, amethyst glass rounds, and turquoise colored pearls to really pull out all the summery colors in the pendant.

This was a great idea I copied from the Artbeads learning center. It was so easy and I know I can replicate these in different colors and styles to fit any occasion. My main thought with these was to promote them at the bridal shows I do. It's perfect for table numbers and to add pictures of the couple at the table. It's also a great take-home favor for the guests at a wedding. It would also be great for birthday party favors with a picture of each child in attendance with the birthday child. The tin can open up and you can put candy or other trinkets inside.

I would love to hear what you think! I'm thinking that these will run around $15 a piece depending on the beads used.

Well, I have the pleasure of going to visit one of my dearest friends over Valentine's Day. I get to see her new house in Iowa....yes, I would much prefer going to California where she used to live...but really it's not the location that's so important...it's getting to see her, her husband, and her son (whom I've not yet met in person).
We will be going out to dinner at their Club for Valentine's Day...yes, it will be a cozy dinner for three (their son will be in childcare at the Club...how awesome is that).

I got a steal on a little black sweater dress yesterday and got a new pair of black boots to go with it...also a steal. So I created some colorful jewelry to go with the outfit. I am really digging how the red coral and the Amazonite looks together. I also added a few vintage crystals to the mix. These crystals are around 100 years old and came from a necklace that belonged to my great aunt. I de-contructed the necklace so I could use the crystals in several pieces.

I am just so grateful that I will get to spend some time with my friend and that I have such an amazing husband who lets me take trips like this. I am blessed!

I recently obtained a wholesale order from Kimberton Whole Foods in Kimberton, PA for several pieces of my chakra jewelry. Since many people are unaware or don't understand the concept of chakra, I thought I would do an introduction for my blog community:

Many of us often experience feelings of unease, yet we can’t quite put our finger on the source. Despite confusion, some seek to dispel the anxiety with food, drugs, alcohol, sex, shopping, etc.; others simply cast a blind eye toward the situation. However, this is like putting duct tape around a leaky pipe: applying a temporary fix to a potentially growing problem.

When the realization hits that deeper intervention is necessary, many people look to prescription medication or psycho-therapy. Others seek answers in religion, while some choose to concentrate on healing body chakras.

Life is energy, and the chakras are about energy. The energy that pervades the universe circulates through us and helps us experience life. Chakras are centers within the body that store and transmit universal energy.

The chakras have been described as whorls of light that are situated along and in-front of the spine. Picture the lights on an Internet modem. When all the lights are shining steadily, your Internet connection is fast and strong. However, the outage of just 1 light indicates a problem and you can’t connect to the Internet. Chakras operate similarly, although obstruction of 1 chakra doesn’t usually bring one’s functionality to a screeching halt as it would on a modem. The chakras are much more complicated in that blockages could cause us to feel emotionally disconnected or imbalanced, specifically in the area controlled by the “stuck” chakra.

Practitioners of eastern religions assert that true happiness can be achieved when all chakras are open, allowing energy to flow in and out. Everyone has 7 major body chakras:

* First Chakra: Base or Root Chakra
* Second Chakra: Svadisthana or The Sacral Chakra
* Third Chakra: Manipura or Solar Plexus
* Fourth Chakra: Anahata or Heart
* Fifth Chakra: Vishuddha or Throat.
* Sixth Chakra: Ajna or Brow Chakra
* Seventh Chakra: Sahasrara or Crown Chakra

The purpose of chakra balancing is to dissolve blockages before they become physical (although it can also be helpful with physical conditions. Crystals, being symmetrical in their molecular structure, radiate energy in a consistent and steady manner. When they're used in chakra balancing they can help to reestablish a healing, creative flow.

One of the nicest aspects of crystals is that they are color-coordinated with the energy centers called the chakras. Each chakra has a color, and usually stones of corresponding colors are placed there.

First: Black, brown, red
Second: Red, orange
Third: Yellow
Solar Plexus: Coral, yellow-green
Fourth: Pink, green
Fifth: Blue
Sixth: Dark blue, purple
Seventh: White

So, the jewelry I created takes crystals and gemstones to help remove blockages and assist the body in fighting of illness and maintain proper system function.

Here are a few of my favorite pieces that I came up with. Each piece has affirmations attached with them. Some of the pieces have affirmations created by repurposing scrabble tiles and others are created using recycled copper and patina-ed brass.

This bracelet is created using Turquoise and Lapis Lazuli. Turquoise is the Master Healer and attracts good fortune and helps enhance creative energy. The lapis lazuli expands awareness and encourages a state of serenity.

This necklace helps attract good fortune and enhance creative energy and also helps encourage optimism and personal power.

Using a repurposed scrabble tile, I created a necklace that will disperse negativity and promote peace and protection.

Valentine's Day Is Coming....

I can't believe Valentine's Day is just around the corner. In the jewelry world, this is a busy time of year and there are lots of great beads to create with.

There are a lot of different symbols associated with Valentine's Day and I try to incorporate these symbols into my creations.

The HEART: It was formerly believed that the heart was the seat of all human emotions. Accordingly, the gifting of a heart signified the selfless act of giving everything to someone you love. Though the ancients were not aware that the heart was responsible for pumping blood though the circulatory system, yet they knew one thing for sure that the heart was the center of all feelings. This ancient belief has lingered on through the ages.

The ROSE: From time immemorial, beloveds have been compared to roses. If we juggle the letters of the word ROSE we get EROS, who is the God of Love. Rose has thus been the traditional choice of lovers around the world. The colour red is associated with strong emotions and below are listed sentiments expressed by different hues of rose:
Lavender -- Enchantment and Uniqueness
Pink (Dark) -- Thankfulness, Friendship and Admiration
Pink (Pale) -- Grace, Joy and Happiness
Black -- Farewell
White -- Innocence, Purity, Secrecy, Silence, Reverence, Humility

RIBBONS, LACE, AND FRILLS: Ribbons and laces have been associated with love and romance since the days when a knight used to ride into a battle sporting the scarf or handkerchief presented to him by his ladylove. In the bygone times, laces were used making women's handkerchiefs. It was also usual for a lady to drop her handkerchief in the path of the man whose attention she wished to draw.

Artbeads is usually the first place I look when I'm creating and I was in luck. They had such a wide assortment of lampwork glass beads and charms especially for Valentine's Day. They even had some great silk ribbons so I could add a little touch of RIBBONS, LACE, AND FRILLS to my project!

The beauty and brilliance of diamonds has been admired throughout history. However, in past centuries their use was reserved strictly for royalty. Today, thanks to remarkable diamond substitutes like Cubic Zirconia, almost anyone can afford to dapper up their accessory collection with dazzling, eye-catching jewelry.

This is why I was so excited to participate in this round of Blogging for Beads with Artbeads.com. I would get the chance to create something shimmery, sparkly, and beautiful and could be worn for the upcoming holidays or even for a bride walking down the aisle. Tess' Necklace

The owner of Kaleidoscope Angels, Tess Jensen, offered up some really beautiful green Fluorite nuggets to me. She said I could use some for myself and create something for her. There were 18 or 19 nuggets on this strand she gave me and they were super heavy. I took 3 of the nuggets and wire wrapped them. I paired them with Chinese sea glass in a seafoam color and voila...this is what I came up with:

I LOVE this necklace since I (and so does Tess) wear a lot of green and turquoise shades. I just think it's a really pretty statement piece.

Vintage Inspired Necklace

As I mentioned in a previous post, I'm trying to come up with some unique pieces of jewelry art for a craft show that is on November 7 from 9 am until 2 pm at the Grace Assembly of God on Rt. 23. I have my domino pins and magnets and now I've come up with some necklaces using vintage art.

I used archival ink to color the glass and then I found some great vintage clip art and inserted it between the 2 pieces of glass. I think these necklaces turned out great and here are a few of my favorites.

These are great layering pieces and are fun to wear by young and old alike. I'd love to hear your comments! Thanks for looking!

What a Great Stocking Stuffer For All the Ladies On Your List....

I'm gearing up for the holidays and the craft shows that go along with them. I have never done a show so I'm going to give it a whirl this year. There are TONS of talented artists out there who make jewelry. I plan on trying out some of my more unique items at the craft show I plan on participating in.
